The Value of a Wave: Surfing’s $194M Impact on Santa Cruz

A new report from Save The Waves Coalition reveals that surfing generates an estimated $194.7 million a year for Santa Cruz’s economy, driven by over 783,000 annual surf visits, local gear purchases, and visitor spending.

But the waves that fuel this cultural and economic powerhouse face a growing threat: sea level rise. The study found that with just one foot of sea level rise, all 31 local breaks will see reduced surfability — and at three feet, more than half could be significantly diminished or lost without intervention.

The good news: nature-based adaptation strategies like sand management and managed retreat can help preserve waves and protect long-term value. The report also highlights the need for equitable access, ensuring that marginalized communities benefit from — and have a voice in — the future of surfing.
