The 35th Annual Waterman's Gala was a tremendous success, marking yet another milestone in the ongoing efforts to unite the surf industry in the fight for ocean preservation. Since its founding in 1989, the Surf Industry Members Association (SIMA) has been dedicated to fostering the growth and unity of surf companies and the broader surfing community. This year's event continued that legacy, celebrating our shared passion for the ocean and raising vital funds for its protection.
The introduction of the Waterman's Gala in 1989 brought the surf community together in a vibrant celebration, establishing the SIMA Environmental Fund to channel proceeds towards nonprofit organizations dedicated to ocean conservation.

This year’s Waterman's Gala exemplified the surf community’s unwavering commitment to environmental protection and the spirit of camaraderie that has made this event so special. This year’s honorees included Nathan Florence, Waterperson of the Year, Gordon Merchant with a Lifetime Achievement Award and Vince Scandone as Environmentalist of the

“The event's visibility and influence have continued to grow, and this year was no exception with a remarkable turnout and significant funds raised for the cause”, said SIMA Environmental Fund President Paul Naude.

The legacy of leaders like Dick Baker, who joined SIMA's Board of Directors in 1999 and became president in 2000, and Paul Naude, who took on the role of vice president in 2000 and later president of the SIMA Environmental Fund, was evident in the evening's success. Together, their vision transformed SIMA and Waterman’s into what it is today—one of the surf industry's most prestigious

Thanks to the generosity of our attendees and supporters, the SIMA Environmental Fund has now raised more than $10 million through the Waterman’s Gala, SIMA Industry Luau and the #SurfCleanOceans campaign. These funds will continue to support organizations that work tirelessly to protect our oceans, beaches, and waves. As our oceans face increasing threats, this collective effort is more important than ever.

The evening was a celebration of those who have made extraordinary contributions to our culture and the ongoing battle to preserve our oceans. The success of this event is a testament to the surf industry's dedication to making a tangible difference.

“We are deeply grateful to everyone who attended and contributed to this year’s Waterman's Ball,” said Vipe Desai, SIMA Executive Director.  “This level of support ensures that the SIMA Environmental Fund can continue its vital work. Together, we move forward and upward, committed to safeguarding the ocean we all cherish.”
